Yeah, I like that verse, I think it's just a simple observation that most who set themselves up as redeemers do fade away and fairly quickly in the grand scheme of things (night keeps coming close on the heels of the day). I don't know if the load of clay is literally the followers/humanity, or if it just means that the work that has to get done continues.

But I think like so many of Hunter's lyrics this one can probably be understood a lot of different ways.

well the whole idea of a redeemer predates Christianity, it's found in a few myths

you might be right. I've always thought of it as the unrealized potential that is squandered by having the wrong perspective

clay holds the potential for much growth. it is an essential part of a healthy soil because its particles are highly polar and hang onto nutrients. clay is useful in the ground but could also be a burden if you always have to pull it around. but of course you are right, it's all a matter of perspective.
as one of you said, the clay may symbolize the work that has to be done. working with the clay serves the function of helping oneself to realize the bloom and decay around them and within them.

interesting. i thought of the clay as weight, you know like new speedway - it's just as hard wit the weight of lead.
